Week 7
Ceilings
In this chapter we learn that ceilings aren't just byproducts of creating a building; it is an opportunity for designers to fundamentally change the whole experience of the structure. we learned in an earlier chapter that designers did not have the ability to decide how the structure of the roof was constructed but they did have a say as to the shape. This is exactly why they must have input as to how the roof is constructed because it directly effects the experience inside.
Having this input creates opportunities for designers to create something like this. I personally am a fan of the use of wood on the ceiling; paired with the high windows it allows for plenty of light to come into the kitchen and reflects a warm brown hue that covers the room. Another element that I found interesting about this room was how the ceiling is not a perfect triangle. We see how there is a sloped protrusion that separates the ceiling into three planes. I find this to be evidence that there was a sense of intentionality with this idea; possibly by the interior designer who had this idea to begin with.
Another idea that I appreciate when looking at ceilings is the exposed framing we see. I think the exposed ceiling ties and the very intentional use of wood on the slopes of the roof gives the inhabitants a sense of security. In comparison to a ceiling covered in ornamental designs or impressions I feel as though there is a unique sense of beauty by exposing the structural frame. This allows people to see the bones of the building along with creating a "cozy" experience.
On the other hand Ceilings also give the opportunity to create a unique space through the ornamentations or designs etched into it. I find these styles to be interesting to say the least but the context of the space is very important to it being an effective choice for designers.
In conclusion, ceilings are a very important element in a building which help emphasize the experience someone has within that space. Our influence as designers are to find creative ways to take advantage of the shape of the structure itself to build on those experiences. This can be in the form of elegant ornamentation, exposed wood , drywall, acoustic control etc. . we have many tools in our arsenal to be able to change a room within a structure for the better.

Hi Gilbert! I agree that ceilings can completely change the feeling of a space. I especially like how exposed wood and natural materials can make a room feel warmer and more inviting while still adding visual interest.
ReplyDeleteGilberto,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your Blog this week. I love how you understand the importance of coordination between an architect or builder and the interior designer. Working together provides the most interesting, functional and beautiful ceiling. The examples and images you provided were beautifully done. 50/50 points
